On 1 October 1756 Frederick attacked what he assumed to be the Austrian rearguard. A thick mist lay in the valley and the advance Prussian cavalry bumped into the Austrian horse and were repulsed. Without orders the main body of Prussian horse followed up and pushed the Austrians back but no infantry followed up. Both cavalry reserves were wasted too early.
On the Austrian right half a dozen units proved to be right pain amongst the vineyards and fields on the hill of Lobosch and more and more Prussians were fed into this mini battle. Along the rest of the line the Prussians were hurled headlong into the ranks of Austrians lurking behinds streams and ponds and within villages. Only to be repulsed time after time.
Shortly after noon Frederick left the field anticipating a general rout. However General Bevern finally broke though on the Lobosch and set fire to the town with howitzer fire. With lack of support this attack petered out and while neither accepted this as defeat the Prussians noted that "these were not the same old Austrians."
